Accounts of female painters in ancient Greece are rare and short – and therefore of immense value. While Greek women with means were known to donate or commission great works of art, not much evidence survives of Greek female artists. The scarcity of such accounts is further evidence of the social restrictions placed upon women in the ancient world.Kora of Sicyon (650 BC) was the daughter of the sculptor Dibutades. She is mencioned by Pliny The Elder in his Natural History, where she is described to use a piece of coal to trace the portrait of her lover on the wall. Her father later filled this in with clay, resulting in one of the first clay reliefs.Anaxandra (228 BC) was known for painting icons and figures from Greek mythology. According to Clement of Alexandria, Anaxandra was an active painter in 228 BC and is mentioned in his work ”Women as Well as men are Capable of Perfection”.Irene (or Alcisthene) (200 BC) is noted to have learned her craft from her father, and her paintings are said to be of significance to the Cult of Demeter, Mother Earth, and Goddess of the Corn.Timarete (5th Century BC) is one of the very few Greek female artists of whom we not only have a record of her artistic contribution, but also her feelings about the roles of Greek women in general. The school of Apelles. Jean Broc, 1800.Apelles of Kos (4th century B.C.), was one of the most renowned painters of ancient Greece. Much of what is known of Apelles is derived from Pliny the Elder (Natural History, XXXV). According to Pliny, Apelles used the encaustic technique for his paintings. Some ancient texts seem to corroborate the notion that artists used a cold water-soluble encaustic, as it allowed the drawing of thin and long lines and could be cleaned with a sponge.The Greeks had considered easel painting as the superior art form. Pompeian paintings have deteriorated successively or even disappeared due to badly performed conservation but mainly due to a lack of maintenance.One example is the decorated room with garden paintings from the Villa of Livia at Prima Porta, just outside Rome, which has been exposed to an incredible amount of interventions. The restoration history of the garden paintings is astonishing. They were exposed to a great number of interventions, until 1951, when they were finally detached and moved to Museo Nazionale Romano. Among the different surface treatments made on these paintings can be mentioned cleaning with bread with alcohol and various solvents, various applications of fluid wax and paraffin diluted in turpentine. It is a wonder that anything of the paintings remains. It must be said however, that on every occasion, the methods used were accepted by those persons responsible, i.e. thought to be adequate and, hopefully, harmless interventions. Casa della Venere in conchiglia, Pompeii. Garden painting. The "horti" were private places for wealthy Romans, pleasure gardens within the city walls, created for resting and pleasure as a contrast to public life at the Forum. According to Pliny the elder, Epicurus was the inventor of such gardens, and Epicurean ideals were important in planning the garden as a place of retreat from the politic life in public in favour of tranquillity and spiritual preoccupations. Paintings representing gardens were often part of the setting, made on the garden walls as imaginary enlargements of the real garden. As the fresco technique is unsuitable for outdoor areas, they were probably painted with water soluble encaustic.

The wall paintings discovered in 1995 at the Coptic monastery Deir elSurian in the Libyan desert, were painted using a wax painting technique. The colours appear brilliant and vivid and the smooth surfaces of the paintings have a particular lustre, which indicates that the paintings were probably made with water soluble encaustic.
As it is often the case, it’s the lack of accurate chemical analysis on ancient paintings that hinders the work of conservators.

Chung-Shih Wang. Cuní Water-soluble encaustic and oil on canvas. In this beautifully atmospheric piece 'A Stroll in City', Wang conveys the sensation of Taipei's humid atmosphere in an imaginary urban scene. He used the optical qualities of water-soluble encaustic - brightness, transparency and colour intensity - to great effect to visualise the city's fast pace. The incorporated Chinese character is taken from Taipei’s “slow down” traffic signs, encouraging to try and escape the relentless speed of urban life occasionally.

The main subject matter of the statuettes are well-dressed young women in various positions, usually standing or sitting.
