Did the Romans use the same materials as the Greeks in their painting?According to ancient sources, encaustic was the wax-based painting technique used by ancient Greek, Roman, and Byzantine artists.The ancient documentary sources reflect the wide use of encaustic by painters in classical antiquity: it is practically the only technique mentioned in connection with the execution of works of art, painters were called encausters or waxers, and the word “wax” was synonymous not only with encaustic, but also with painting.The Roman artist inherited the palette of the Egyptian and Greek artist, but what is perhaps different is the ease with which the range of pigments became available across the Empire. This reflects the extent of trading between centres of pigment extractionand making and the main centres of art production.Blue pigments used were derived from:1. Blue azurite, a naturally occurring copper carbonate mineral found in Morocco and France often found with green malachite.2. Unlike most organic paint media, which require to be applied on completely cured mortar, Cuní water soluble encaustic can be used on wet or uncured lime or cement mortar. The paint layer in contact with the wet mortar becomes quickly cured and water insoluble.

The Greek tradition of painting their ships with encaustic is well documented in art and literature, and was mentioned already by Homer. He refers to ships that had been painted with red or blue colours, and states that such painting was performed in a technique, which had been invented in Asia Minor. Not only were the ships painted, they had decorations as well.The custom of painting ships with wax must have been in use during the Classic, Hellenistic and Roman periods, since it was still adapted at the end of the Roman Imperial period. Kallixenos recorded the tradition in his book about Alexandria. He described how the ship of Ptolemaios Philipator was decorated with wax paintings in many colours. While Greek women with means were known to donate or commission great works of art, not much evidence survives of Greek female artists. The scarcity of such accounts is further evidence of the social restrictions placed upon women in the ancient world.Kora of Sicyon (650 BC) was the daughter of the sculptor Dibutades. She is mencioned by Pliny The Elder in his Natural History, where she is described to use a piece of coal to trace the portrait of her lover on the wall. Her father later filled this in with clay, resulting in one of the first clay reliefs.Anaxandra (228 BC) was known for painting icons and figures from Greek mythology. According to Clement of Alexandria, Anaxandra was an active painter in 228 BC and is mentioned in his work ”Women as Well as men are Capable of Perfection”.Irene (or Alcisthene) (200 BC) is noted to have learned her craft from her father, and her paintings are said to be of significance to the Cult of Demeter, Mother Earth, and Goddess of the Corn.Timarete (5th Century BC) is one of the very few Greek female artists of whom we not only have a record of her artistic contribution, but also her feelings about the roles of Greek women in general.
