Blue Green

Green for growth and harmony, blue for depth and stability. This ancient Roman mural of a lush painted garden covered the walls of a semi-subterranean chamber, probably a cool triclinium (dining room) for summer banquets, in the suburban Villa of Livia Drusilla, the wife of Augustus. Painted in 30-20 BC, the colours are amazingly still…

Red denotes prosperity and good fortune! The Inhabitants of Pompeii used red as one of the predominant background colours of the internal walls of their houses. Cuní y StolzCuní y Stolz
Let’s give some merit to the man who infected José Cuní with the bug to find the long lost formula of the paint medium used by artists in Greco Roman antiquity: Ramón Stolz (1903-1958), professor of Painting Techniques and Wall Painting. Here are Stolz and (a very young) Cuní whilst restoring the frescoes in San Antonio de la Florida, Madrid, painted by Francisco de Goya in 1789. Ramón Stolz had gathered a large library on encaustics. and examined the various reconstructions proposed by previous researchers and concluded that the formula used by Greco-Roman artists was different from any modern reconstructions. How amazed would he be today to see that his student actually did find the formula, verified by the Royal Society for Chemistry, and that this amazing ancient medium is now back in use. Really try it out, this is no gimmick.

This is a beautiful arts `project from a student at the Cooper Union in New York, having her body painted in various layers of Encaustic paint by Pedro Cuní himself. We love it!! Please bear in mind that, even if our paint doesn’t contain any noxious elements whatsoever,  Cuní Water Soluble Encaustic is  (not yet) certified as a cosmetic or body paint – so don’t try this at home just yet 🙂
